The Ganesh-Himal.be ASBL (ASBl is the Belgian legal status for a non-lucrative association) has been officially created on the 28th of February 2007.

Actually, many of its members were already active since September 2005. The initiative comes from a group of young people, most of them coming from the neighborhood of Pierreuse, in the city of Liège (Belgium),whose members are all deeply concerned with Nepal, hiking, climbing, cycling,...

As they were already developing alternatives visions about the management of those activities (in particular, from an environmental and cultural point of view), they decided to give an official status to their formal association.

The "Ganesh Himal" name is the one of a Nepalese Himalayas’ range, which is the favorite place of the founders.

Objectives

The Ganesh-Himal.be objectives as defined in the status follow two main axes, namely :

- The promotion of activities respectful for the environment (with a wide meaning).
- The support of local development initiatives.

The first point essentially deals with hiking, cycling, mountaineering and climbing. The association place herself at a level of informant stakeholder, providing advices to carry on one’s trip in a respectful way for the local nature and culture.

The "promotion" concept will also be, at mid-term, the set-up of treks on the basis of alternative concepts (notably treks without motorized vehicles, toward poorly known area, etc ...).

The well-justified of this objective lies in the fact that outdoor activities can and do cause harms, and eventually disasters, on several levels. Furthermore, the achievement of it favors the opening of minds for the trekkers and more widely the occidental community.

The second point essentially concern Nepal for the time being, but this is not limiting at long-term. It is justified by the principle that the improvement of life conditions (to avoid the term "development") lies on simple actions, direct and involving directly the protagonist of concerned community.
